Cops hunt three escapees from Central lock-ups
Gun violence flares in Hannah Town

published: Sunday | May 16, 2004

THE POLICE were kept busy in the Corporate Area yesterday, hunting for three men who had escaped their custody at the Central Police lock-ups and trying to quell a gun battle in Hannah Town between rival gangs, in which at least one woman was shot.

They have launched a manhunt for the three prisoners who escaped yesterday afternoon. And the Police Office of Professional Responsibility are investigating the circumstances under which the men broke free from the lock-ups.

On the run are Colin Brown 26, of Woodford Street, Kingston 4; Devon Allen 40, otherwise called 'Sido' of Fairfield Avenue, Spanish Town, St. Catherine, both charged with murder and Marvin Blake 17, of St. Raphael Road, Kingston 2, who was convicted on charges of illegal possession of firearm and ammunition and was awaiting sentencing by the court.

ROUTINE CHECKS

The police said that about 1:30 p.m., routine checks were being carried out when the men were discovered missing. Following a search of the cells it was revealed that the prisoners had made their escape by cutting a ventilation grill.

Meanwhile, gun violence flared in Hannah Town in western Kingston leaving at least one woman nursing a gunshot wound.

The Denham Town Police said several shots were fired about 9 o'clock yesterday morning, however the shooting subsided when a police party arrived in the area.

But it resumed about 4:30 p.m. resulting in the injury to the woman.

According to the police, two other women reported that they were shot at earlier in the day.

The police also said this latest flare-up is believed to be emanating from disagreements between gang members in the area.

The police have detained two persons in connection with the shootings. Up to press time yesterday they had not been charged.
