THE EDITOR, Sir:
On May 12 The newspaper recorded 450 reported murders so far this year. That's approximately four people per day, one in every 5,000 being murdered if average population is 2.5 million. The statistics is alarming for such a small nation. What to do? How did we get here?
Well, my unschooled thought has lead me to a few conclusions:
1. Politics - if politicians cared they would have made tighter gun control laws. Ever wonder how the 'worse' in our society manage to get guns? I have no doubt that this splurge of violence in the last 10 years can be traced back to some of our most 'prestigious' leaders.
2. Cable TV - The advent of cable television was good in some ways, but it opened creative avenues for criminals. Drive-by shooting, kidnapping and ransom are all 'stories' on cable TV. Get this, it is NOT true.
3. Economics - Needs no explanation. What is needed?
a). A revolution in thinking. Enough with partisan talk. The Government and the Opposition must be held accountable to the people. How can they stop crime when they are the ones MOST responsible for this mess?
b). A strong non-partisan approach to economic reform. Economic policies should be debated and voted on in open forum by qualified economics personnel.
c). I strongly oppose Asset Forfeiture Laws, but there are cases when they can be used. Corrupt businessmen, politicians should be subjected to an asset forfeiture law that is swift and immediate! Use the Law Department at the University!
Finally, if we don't deal with this problem, stand in a crowd of 5000 and try to spot the next victim! It just might be you!
I am etc.,
