Traffic changes
published: Wednesday | May 19, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I WISH to bring attention to two concerns I have relating to traffic to Spanish Town and in Spanish Town. I want to know how many motorists are aware of the traffic change in the afternoon between 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. between Berger Paints and Weymouth Drive. Many times motorists using that section of the road are forced to use a single lane, causing serious back-up at times going into Spanish Town/Six Miles.

I recall a sign pointing to the fact that there is a two-lane allowance for traffic heading west. Recently I came under the ire of my fellow motorists wondering if I were an idiot to be driving in the wrong lane. With all my beckoning and indicating that it was two lanes at that hour, I was almost run down by a Coaster bus whose driver was bent on teaching me a lesson. Can someone from the relevant authority enlighten me or my fellow motorists regarding the traffic change in the afternoons, Mondays to Fridays heading west.

My second concern is that of the intersection at March Pen Road and the Spanish Town bypass. Far too often motorists block that intersection, causing persons leaving March Pen Road in both directions with no alternative but to either wait until another three light changes or meander their way through small spaces left by drivers who have blocked the intersection.

I think there should be signs in either direction asking motorists not to block the intersection or have that grid painted in the intersection that they should not block. It may be cheaper to paint the grid, but I believe that this is urgently needed. Someone should visit that area, especially on a Saturday or Sunday afternoons and during peak hour to see the mess that is created by inconsiderate drivers. Please give some help.

I am, etc.,

NOEL A. PENNANT
