AN 18-YEAR-OLD was yesterday stabbed to death by a group of students from the Donald Quarrie High School at the Harbour View Shopping Centre, east Kingston, the Constabulary Communication Network (CCN) has confirmed.
Dead is Marvin Dennis of 8 Copley Drive in Harbour View. He was pronounced dead at the Kingston Public Hospital (KPH).
According to eyewitness accounts, Dennis was stabbed several times by the school boys who 'ganged him' after he exited a shop on the plaza.
The deceased's mother, Thetlia Clarke, who wept openly at the Harbour View Police Station, said her son was the victim of a dispute one of her son's friends had with other men.
SHOCKED AT TRAGEDY
According to the mother, Dennis was hardworking and loved to repair vehicles. She said she had left him at home repairing his scooter bike that had been giving problems when she got a call at work about the tragedy. Ms. Clarke said her son formerly attended Donald Quarrie before she transferred him to the Kingston Technical High School where he learned electrical installation.
A man, who gave his name as Clive and who claimed to have witnessed the incident, was adamant that the students needed to be detained. He said the boys were a nuisance to the area and are known 'trouble makers'. "Dem come all wid dem big ganja spliff come smoke over deh (the plaza)," he asserted.
When the school was visited yesterday, Leaford Hines, principal of the Donald Quarrie High, told The Gleaner that he had not heard of the tragedy but was aware that a fight had occurred earlier outside the school gate. He, however, admitted that the school has been having problems with indiscipline and the police had to be called in on several occasions.
