By Teino Evans, Staff ReporterTHE HEAVY rains earlier in the day last Friday may have detracted from a potentially great party, as few patrons turned out in the rainy weather to partake of the free Bacardi mixes and great musical juggling by some of uptown's finest selectors.
The party, dubbed 'High Spirits', was held at the Indies Pub and Grill, 8 Holborn Road in New Kingston. The event was slated to get under way at 9:30 p.m., but at around 11:00 when The Gleaner team arrived, the venue was practically empty.
Nevertheless, as the night rolled on, a few persons started to trickle into the venue, hoping that the vibes would eventually pick up.
There were many incentives for patrons to enjoy themselves and have a good time, despite the weather. Over 50 free Bacardi mixed drinks were served all throughout the night, plus free detox bar. Added to the mix was some great musical spinning on the turntables by Razz and Biggy, Coppershot and DJ Kurt Riley of FAME FM.
Thanks to the free liquor and the selectors, the few patrons who turned out did not regret coming out in the rain, as they drank and danced to a selection of dancehall, hip hop and R&B music into the early hours of the morning.
MUSICAL FAVOURITES
Razz and Biggy had no reservations, as they gave patrons some dancehall favourites like Elephant Man's Yuh Too Bad Mind, Chuck Fender's I Swear and a few selections from their Richie Spice collection. This got patrons in the groove of things, so much so that one patron fell to the ground, after having a little too much to drink.
The party vibes peaked, however, when DJ Kurt Riley took over on the turntables at about 2:00 a.m., and churned up a storm. Riley first started out on the softer side, giving patrons songs like Step In The Name Of Love by R. Kelly, before venturing off into some 50 Cent tunes like Wangsta.
Shortly after, Riley came full circle to dancehall, as he unleashed a musical fiesta headed by a series of tunes from Elephant Man, the 'Energy God'.
Things then got crazy in the early morning, as patrons got busy on the dance floor, jumping and gyrating to tunes like Yuh Jiggy Body and Signal Di Plane.
According to one female patron, "Mi neva expec seh di party woulda turn out suh nice, cause when mi reach an si di likkle bit a people mi did a consider fi guh home, but tru mi reach already mi decide fi gwaan jam."
At 3:30 a.m when some persons started to exit the venue, the vibes were still in full swing.
