Extortion: a serious issue
published: Wednesday | June 2, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I ALWAYS had a dream of owning my own home. Although I am not able to afford one at this moment, I am always perusing the papers for new housing developments and mortgage options. My heart sank deeply, however, upon reading the letter dated Tuesday, June 1, 2004, 'Extortion Plaguing Eltham Vista'. I suddenly felt a sense of hopelessness to my dream. What is the point of fighting 'hell and high water' to become a homeowner when the freedom to even upgrade your home is denied by criminals?

Extortion is a very serious issue for the very reason that it is a huge part of the financing of firearm purchase! So what you are actually doing is giving money to the criminal to sustain his way of life so that he can buy the firearm to terrorise you and others.

Members of the Constabulary Force, this is one of the reasons (drug trafficking being the main one) the fight against crime is getting harder; they have financial backing!

What would encourage these people to work in these harsh economic times, when all they have to do is go around and collect? Scared Homeowner, I am praying for you.Keep trusting in God.

I am, etc.,

T. PALMER
