A very special 'Good Samaritan'
published: Friday | June 4, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I WOULD like to bring to your attention an incident that occurred yesterday evening on the Spanish Town bypass, and in so doing, also thank the 'Good Samaritan' that came to my assistance. Upon failing to negotiate a gaping pothole, the right 'control arm' of my vehicle's front wheel was displaced and the entire wheel came off from the car. I was able to maintain some degree of control until I stopped safely at the side of the road.

As soon as the mishap occurred a gentleman, who was apparently driving behind me, pulled over in front of me and offered what assistance he could. He got on his cell phone, called his mechanic, who was in Bog Walk, to see whether or not the mechanic could have come to have a look at, and offer some solution to my predicament.

When that failed he called some friends to see if they could have contacted a wrecker service for me. Unfortunately, that also failed and night was already upon us. He mentioned that he could not have left me there alone so he took his wife and three daughters out of the car, left them with me and went to the Spanish Town Police Station and got a wrecker to take me home (all the way to Clarendon).

His kindness did not end there as he also negotiated the price for me and assisted the young man (in his early 20s) who was driving the wrecker to put the car on the wrecker. He even ensured that I had enough money to pay the gentleman and allowed the wrecker to drive off before he and his family continued their journey.

I want to thank this Godsent (Mr. Danny Cargill of Linstead) and his family for their timely assistance. It is comforting to know that kindness is still alive and well. May God continue to bless you and yours, Mr. Cargill, and thanks again for everything.

I am, etc.,
