Four security guards shot, one dies
published: Thursday | June 24, 2004

By Glenroy Sinclair, Staff Reporter

THE COLLEAGUES of security guard Walford Edwards, stared stone-faced at his body yesterday as it lay on a stretcher at the Madden's Funeral Home morgue in downtown Kingston.

Edwards was one of four security guards shot by a lone gunman during an afternoon drama which began at the intersection of Molynes and Eastwood Park roads, in St. Andrew, where hundreds of motorists and pedestrians were going about their business.

Reports are that shortly after 1:00 p.m., Mr. Edwards and a colleague, both attached to the Atlas Protection Response team, rode up on separate motorcycles, in time to witness the gunman robbing a motorist at the stop light.

Without hesitating, the gunman turned his weapon on the security guards, shooting both. Mr. Edwards was hit in the hand, but the bullet flew through and pierced his upper body.

Armed with what seems to be a very powerful handgun, the culprit in an attempt to escape, came in contact with a vehicle that was transporting a group of security guards, attached to a separate security company. It is alleged that the gunman took on the guards, who at one stage had to abandon their vehicle and run for safer ground.

When the smoke had cleared, it was discovered that a third security guard was shot. Up to late yesterday evening, the police were unable to give an update on the condition of the injured guards.

During the shooting people were seen running all over the place, while horrified motorists tooted their horns in confusion, as they attempted to get out of the way. The incident occurred during the busy period while a number of students were making their way home.
