DR. ERROL Miller, Professor of Teacher Education in the Institute of Education at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, has been designated the recipient of the 2004 Education International (EI) Albert Shanker Education Award.
Education International, which gives the award, is a worldwide trade union organisation of education personnel, whose 26 million members represent all sectors of education from pre-school to university, national trade unions and associations in 162 countries and territories. Professor Miller is a past president of the Jamaica Teachers Association and was nominated for the award by the organisation.
Albert Shanker was the first president of Education International. The award is given to a teacher or other education employee in recognition of an outstanding personal contribution to education. The awardee's professional action will have demonstrated that quality education requires quality teachers and education employees. That professional action will also have reflected a commitment to educational excellence and the promotion of democracy, social justice and equality through education.
The awardee is also expected to have demonstrated commitment to the ideals and aspirations of the Constitution of Education International and will be an inspiration to colleagues. In principle, the recipient will be a classroom teacher or an education employee working directly with pupils or students.
The award will be presented to Professor Miller during the EI Awards Dinner which takes place on the evening of Sunday, July 25, 2004 during the EI's Fourth World Congress to be held in Porto Alegre, Brazil, from July 22-26.
The Congress is being held using the theme "Education for Global Progress" and will be attended by over 1,000 delegates representing teachers and education personnel worldwide.
