Better water management needed
published: Wednesday | June 30, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THIS IS an open letter to the Prime Minister, Minister of Water and Minister of Tourism.

I am quite concerned about water supplies to my area, Hope Pastures, but realise that there are many other areas in Jamaica with the same concern. Recently I was listening to the programme 'Disclosure' and a gentleman called from Trelawny advising that this parish was being very badly treated as its water was being siphoned off to Montego Bay for the purpose of watering golf courses.

Now, if this is true it certainly is a very sad reflection on the NWC, and the Ministry of Tourism. We are now in the 21st century where so many techniques are available to us and one of these techniques is that of using waste water for irrigation etc.. It now begs the question as to why the hotels in Montego Bay are not using this technology to irrigate their golf courses. Certainly their waste water should be used for this purpose, what is the Minister of Tourism doing about this very serious problem?.

Certainly the people of Trelawny should have access to Martha Brae and Queen Hythe schemes. The Prime Minister cannot do everything, but this is a matter of national importance and the buck lies with him.

I really wonder why a government who is promoting 'values and attitudes' could be a party to disconnecting NWC customers who pay their bills so as to get even with the others who are not paying theirs.

Certainly the NWC should have the technology to cut off the water to those who are not paying and ensure that they cannot reconnect. There must be some technology around to achieve this. What about levying on furniture, motorcars etc., to collect outstanding amounts?. Something must be done about this problem and innocent people must not be made to suffer for crimes committed by others.

I am, etc.,

BARBARA COVER
