Powell, Campbell head Olympic team

NATIONAL SPRINT champions Asafa Powell and Veronica Campbell, head a strong Jamaican contingent of 45 track and field athletes for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece this summer.

Powell, the national 100m record holder, heads the list of 23 men while female sprint double champion Campbell tops the 22 women.

Also including in the squad are World Junior 200m record holder Usain Bolt and Lorraine Fenton. Both missed last weekend's National Championships because of injury. Bolt is scheduled to compete at this month's World Junior Championships in Italy while Fenton has until August 4 to prove her fitness.

Also included are veteran 400m runner Sandie Richards who will be attending her fifth Olympics, national shot put record holder Kimberli Barrett (18.28), the first shot putter to represent Jamaica at an Olympics and James Beckford who won the long jump silver eight years ago in Atlanta.

Former national 110m hurdles record Christopher Pinnock (14.29) and former 100m champion Peta-Gaye Dowdie (22.87- 200m), both finished fifth and fourth respectively at the trials and along Michelle Ballentine who has only secured a 'B' standard 800m time were also included.
