'God answered my prayers'
published: Sunday | July 18, 2004

Newly-weds Dulè Hill and Nicole Lyn.

Janet Silvera, Gleaner Writer

WESTERN BUREAU:

WHEN DULE Hill saw his bride Nicole Lyn on Saturday, he said the first thoughts that came to mind, were the scripture, 'God can do exceedingly abundantly above all that you can ask or think.'

"That moment proved that scripture right," said the star of the four-time Emmy Awards-winning Drama, The West Wing. He plays the character, 'Charlie,' personal aide to the president.

For years he had prayed for an authentic Jamaican wife. "A woman with a special purity in terms of her essence and Nicole is all that and more." He said she is genuine and that "it's hard to find someone you can really trust."

The couple exchanged vows in the presence of 300 guests on the lawns of the upscale 50-year-old Round Hill Hotel and Villas last Saturday. 'Birds of Paradise' was the decor chosen by the celebrity pair, while the Caribbean sea provided the backdrop for the romantic setting.

Dulè was decked out in a Woody Wilson tan linen suit while his bride was adorned in a white halter-back dress by New York-based designer Pamela Dennis. Dennis' touch included lots of shirring on the bodice, finished with chiffon, perfect for the hot Jamaican weather.

"When I saw her on Saturday, she was more beautiful in her dress than I had imagined," said Dulè. For the past three years the two, both of Jamaican parentage, have been dating. Dulè's parents are Bertram and Dr. Jennifer Hill and Nicole's are Peter Lyn of the famed 'Coconut Joe,' and Cheryl Phillips.

The handsome couple first met in New York in 1997 through a mutual friend but never stayed in touch. As fate would have it, their paths crossed again in 2000 and Dulè said he knew this was the woman he would marry.

"I told my friends, if I had the chance to be with her, I know I would marry her." Those who thought that was wishful thinking witnessed the making of a new dawn last Saturday, when the couple repeated the well-known vows, 'for better or for worse, in sickness and in health.'

A WONDERFUL PERSON

As for Nicole, her husband is a wonderful person who is very giving. "He has a pure and beautiful spirit, he is completely real and he is handsome," said the actress, who has been making waves on stage since age seven.

Her latest projects include the film Deliver us from Eva, in which she played the Jamaican nail lady in the hair salon.

The Hills' wedding celebration started last Thursday night with a bash at Doctor's Cave beach. An impressive celebrity guest list included The West Wing's creator and writer, Aaron Sorkin, Richard Schiff, Josh Malina who plays 'Will' and is the producer of Celebrity Poker; Gabriel Union of Bad Boys, Hill Harper of CSI N.Y., Dawn Lewis of A Different World, Melinda Williams of Soul Food and Jaleel 'Urkle' White of the famed Family Matters.

Parents of the bride and groom, stepfather, Andrew Phillips, Dulè's grandfather, Rev. Dr. Berris Hill and attorney-at-law Jeannie Foster are just a few of the persons who attended this beautiful sunset ceremony.
