GC Foster to host sports training for parents
published: Wednesday | July 21, 2004

THE G.C. Foster College of Physical Education and Sport in Angels, St. Catherine, will be hosting a programme aimed specifically at teaching parents basic sporting skills.

Set to take place on August 14 and 15, the programme will offer training in the areas of cricket, basketball, football, sports medicine and nutrition.

Yvonne Kong, principal of G.C. Foster College, said the idea for the programme came about after several parents made requests to the chairman of the school board Dr. Winston Dawes, for the college to provide the opportunity for parents to learn more about the activities in which their children are actively involved.

LONG-TERM HELP FOR PARENTS

She said the institution was happy to develop the programme as its mandate involves promo-ting physical education among all Jamaicans, not just children.

Mrs. Kong also noted that the programme should help children in the long run. "Parents will learn about proper nutrition and how to properly deal with their children's sports injuries," she said.

"It will also help them later in life as parents will be able to pass on knowledge of the basic techniques associated with sports to them at an early age. By the time they get to be teenagers and are working with coaches, they will already know a lot."

The school will provide a specialist nutritionist, a specialist in the treatment of sports injuries, as well as specialist sportsmen, to assist in the training of the parents.

The cost of the programme is $3,000, the proceeds of which will be used to reactivate the college's swimming pool facilities.
