THE EDITOR, Sir:
SOMETIMES, I wonder if the silence of our leaders means they are comfortable with what is happening. The crime, extortion, collusion and corruption is just appalling.
The Government seems to have no answer to belling the cat. We had a good Commissioner of Police in Trevor MacMillan in whom the people had much confidence. We were beginning to gain and give respect to our police officers. The well-needed intelligence that the present Minister of National Security and Commissioner now talk about was being built from then between police and civilians. However, Col. McMillan was discarded.
It seems we really don't want action, what we want is the constant talk, talk, talk and more talk while the majority is held ransom by a minority.
At the moment, there is no deterrent to crime. A man feels he has 80 per cent chance of getting away than being caught. We need to reverse that. Whatever system is set up, he needs to feel that there is 99 per cent chance he will be caught and that will deter him. This principle would apply to all areas of the society traffic violations, unfair business practices, etc. Act now Mr. Minister. We are losing our country.
I am, etc.,
