What about freedom of speech?
published: Saturday | July 24, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I AGREE with the writer of the letter who advocates that all anti-gay songs be banned from the radio.

In the same breath why don't we ban all songs with sexual innuendoes to prevent pre or extra-marital sexual relations? Then we should ban all the radio programmes that express religious and political opinions and all other shows, songs, poems, literature that express anything that could possibly enter into our unconscious.

After all, if we should rely on the opinions expressed by the writer of the aforementioned letter, we are just mindless zombies, waiting to be hypnotized by anyone who speaks their opinion.

I am interested to know how the writer of that letter would account for other injustices within our society, such as the sexual abuse of numerous women and children, the brutal killings of over 700 persons since the start of the year. Or are these deaths and incidence not important as they do not concern an 'oppressed' part of society? In addition, doesn't freedom of speech apply to those with whom we don't agree?

I am, etc.,

ITHAMAR MARCUS

Kingston
