Stop raping the poor!
published: Thursday | July 29, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I HAVE just read Mr. Lozer's letter published yesterday, and I must say that it was with much trepidation. Firstly I confess that I haven't seen the financial reports referred to, but huge profits by an institution set up to assist those who are close to 'financial impotence' is at best immoral. I have always thought that the rates charged by the Students Loan Bureau (SLB) are exorbitant.

I believe that it is time that the Government makes a decision on this agency. I suggest that since the SLB is not applying these surpluses to their stakeholders (by cutting rates) then they perhaps need to look at giving a rebate, just as the National Housing Trust (NHT) does. It is high time that they stop raping the poor.

I am, etc.,
