Brown urges more support for young Ja squads
published: Sunday | August 1, 2004

WITH ALL the focus on the senior Reggae Boyz and their bid for World Cup qualification, technical director Carl Brown appealed to sponsors and the public to support the Under-17 and Under-20 teams which also have their World Cup qualifications next month.

"I'm appealing to our sponsors, I know it's not an area where we spend a lot of time and money on but we are appealing for sponsorship for these groups," Brown pleaded.

The Under-17 qualifiers begin on August 11 and the Under-20's on August 21.

More than 20 countries affiliated with the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) are expected in the island to compete in both age categories.

SEPARATION NEEDED

"The 20s and 17s really need to be separated from the senior team who I know everybody wants to see qualify for the World Cup and we acknowledge that, that is where football in this country will be measured - by the team getting to Germany. But these 17s and 20s are really in need of your support," Brown added. Speaking on the talent of the Under-20, Brown said: "This Under-20 team could be the example of what football in this country will be.

"This team is an indication of what time spent with footballers on the field can do and we have seen the growth ... this is probably the one team that we have spent some time with and we are seeing the benefits from that in the growth we are seeing from these young footballers."

The Under-17 team is presently in Cuba training and returns on Monday and the Under-20 squad is in a training camp with the local-based Reggae Boyz.
