Let's put values and attitudes into action
published: Friday | August 6, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

MR. DELROY Chuck frequently writes about economic matters, criticising the Government's policies but rarely suggesting viable sustainable alternatives.

In his recent article 'Crime And The Economy' he suggested that the Government's economic policies are creating the stress and frustration that breed the climate for social indiscipline, corruption and criminality, especially in the inner cities. Maybe so.

I would like to hear from Mr. Chuck if it is the same Govern-ment's economic policies that are driving white collar indiscipline, corruption and criminality in many of our financial institutions, certain professions and some large private corporations which are sacred cows and a law unto themselves.

Why are the Chinese in this country making great economic strides despite the Government's disastrous economic policies? Some of them are doing business in some of the most violent inner-city areas and they are still successful. There must be some non-economic factors that underpin their economic success. I would suggest the following: a deep sense of history of who they are; a strong family structure; respect for their elders; hard work, co-operation and frugality.

Now, Mr. Chuck, I appreciate the fact that most of these non-economic factors are absent from the majority of black people's attitudes and values but can you, as a leader of a constituency that is predominantly black, try and instil these values and attitudes.

I am, etc.,
