THE EDITOR, Sir:
I CANNOT help but notice the way the citizens of Portmore are being duped. The authorities really intend to charge a toll of $50 but because they know that they are going to face resistance, and quite rightly so, they announce that the toll will be $65.
I can bet that after all the protest and squealing the authorities are going to announce that they are reducing the toll to $50 with the hope that this will quell the unease amongst the Portmore residents. How else can one explain a toll of $65 to leave your home and go home when the toll on the highway bypassing Old Harbour is only $50?
OFFER AN OPTION
My only hope is that the citizens of Portmore realise this ploy and insist that they are not willing to pay to go home. Why can't they make the highway adjacent to the present road and offer the motorists the option to use their road or use the existing roadway, which would have been a part of the cost when Portmore residents decided to invest in their homes in that community?
A person who works in Kingston, as almost all Portmore residents do, will end up paying more than $32,500 per annum more for transportation. When this amount is grossed up, it amounts to $48,507.46 in before tax income that is required to ensure that the this person is not left in a worse situation.
I hope the residents stand in unison and fight this wicked, capitalistic and greedy idea.
