THE PETERSFIELD Branch Library in Westmoreland hosted a summer programme for 60 children from Petersfield and its environs. This programme was held from July 19-30, under the theme, 'Our Island Jamaica, Uniquely Different'.
Mrs. Althea Davis-Harvey, co-ordinator, told The Gleaner that for this year's programme, they focused on achievements in sports, music and academics.
During the period, she said, a number of motivational speakers were invited to speak to participants on various topics.
SPEAKERS
Speakers included Detective L. Daley and he spoke on the 'Involvement of Children in Crime'. Mr. Mathias Brown spoke on the importance of community clubs and organisations. Corporal Roy Whyte of the Westmoreland fire department spoke on Fire
prevention. Mrs. Pearl Ruddock, senior teacher at the Petersfield Primary & Infant School, spoke on the importance of education and Mrs. Valrie Christie spoke on the role of children and their rights.
Some of the other activities the children participated in were quiz competitions; indoor and outdoor games and computer skills as well as knowledge and use of the National Flag.
The programme ended on July 30 with a treasure hunt, concert, movie, prizegiving and awards. Awards were given for the quiz competition, art & craft, most obedient and best attendance (punctuality).
Mr. Matthias Brown of the Association of Clubs provided the 10 most disciplined children with a free trip to the Denbigh Agricultural Show on August 2, plus lunches.
