Determined to win - Miss Jamaica World Competition
published: Friday | August 20, 2004

HERE IS one of the 20 contestants in the Miss Jamaica World Competition. Leading up to the Grand Coronation Show, scheduled for September 11 at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel, the contestants will participate in various mini-competitions that will determine the top 10. The 'talent', 'sports' and 'beach beauty' competitions are three such. The public is invited to 'Pick the Winner' via telephone voting, using their C&W bMobile phones.

To vote for Nadia Youngman, call 444-4209

Name: Nadia Youngman (Miss Lux Skincare)

Age: 24

Occupation: Administrative assistant

Height: 5'5"

Weight: 110 lb

Vital statistics: 32-24-37

What is your response to the claim that beauty contests are superficial?:

That was my impression too. But as I got into it I realised it really isn't. I realise it is more about brains. I interviewed some former queens and they didn't think they were the best looking girl in the competition.

What, in your opinion, is your best quality?:

Determination. When someone tells me I can't do it then, oh I will do it. My mother will call it stubbornness, but I call it determination.

How does being in the competition affect your career goals and how will it affect them if you win?:

I want to be a cardiologist. I think it will affect it in a positive way. I've always been an intellectual person. I've always been what they call the nerd. I think this contest expands you in this way. I think it will have a positive impact on what I do in the future.

What do you think of the addition of the talent, sports and beach beauty mini-competitions to the pageant?:

I think it's a great opportunity for the girls who win to be placed in the top 10. It's a great opportunity, so that the girls who win are not just pretty girls, but also a mixture of talent and athletic ability.

Which of the mini-competitions would you stand the best chance of winning?:

Not sports. I think I'll have a better chance in the talent and the beach beauty competitions.

Name three must-haves:

Health, a sound mind and my family.

Why should you win the title of 'Miss Jamaica World'?:

Because I believe that my determination will bring me to be the best representative that Jamaica could have.
