Chicken farmers get new 'tunnel' system
published: Saturday | August 21, 2004

Rasbert Turner, Gleaner Writer

SPANISH TOWN, St. Catherine:

THE RURAL Agricultural Development Authority has reported that chicken farmers in St. Catherine have been introducing the more effective 'tunnel' system to raise their birds.

The 'tunnel' system, an automated operation, has the ability to produce 70,000 mature birds in five weeks.

"It is an expensive pursuit but will be beneficial sooner than later," said Andrew Carty, RADA's parish manager for St. Catherine, adding that "I know it is the way to go."

Mr. Carty said it was
important that other areas of the livestock industry, particularly goat rearing, be further developed.
