LETTER OF THE DAY:
Highlight the good, not the criminals

published: Saturday | August 21, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

EVERYBODY IS saying Jamaica is so terrible. It has been losing its morals day by day and everyone is just all for themselves. Jobs are hard to get and education is so expensive only a few can afford it and you know the whole works.

I hereby beg to disagree. It is just a minority of Jamaicans who are immoral and spoil the name of the entire country. The aim of this letter is to highlight the good deeds of the Port Authority of Jamaica, 15-17 Duke Street, Kingston. This organisation has been motivating and building youths like myself by way of their summer work programme. At least 60 students both from universities and high schools across the island are accepted every five weeks for the entire summer.

It's organisations like these that really offer our youths a sense of purpose, improving their level of confidence and giving them a glimpse of what to expect in the world of work.

'Big up' to Port Authority. Jamaica is not so bad. We have numerous good, willing, hard-working and kind-hearted people and organisations. We only need to highlight them more and not the criminals.

I am, etc.,

ALICIA MCGLASHING
