THE EDITOR, Sir:
THE REV. Herro Blair is being hauled over the coals for his recent statement that women who wear skimpy clothing were encouraging men to rape them. With due regard to those denouncing him, he is perfectly right. In fact, he is only being true to the Scriptures, which he has been called to defend and interpret. He is simply drawing out the implications of Genesis 3:7 and Genesis 3:21.
For those who have not discarded them, but who can see the eternal truths contained in the simple accounts of Genesis, the teaching is clear. Human beings, as created by God, are two-fold in nature divine and animal or 'earthly' (Gen 2:7). Just as the bodily aspect of man is sustained by its source the earth, so the divine aspect of man is also sustained by its Source God. When man sinned against God, the relationship with the divine Source life was broken. This meant that the divine aspect of his life began to decrease and the animal aspect of his life began to increase. This was mirrored in the fact that the sexual urges of the animal nature, formerly controlled (Gen.1.28), became intensified, and, for the first time, man and woman became conscious of the strength of their
sexual urges. That is why they became
conscious of their "nakedness". They attempted to overcome this consciousness by covering the main organs of sexual activity with fig leaves Gen. 3:21.
ADEQUATE CLOTHING
It was God who gave human beings
adequate clothing. This is a clear indication that God, who created men and women, is opposed to skimpy clothing. But modern human beings are wiser than God, and so what has happened? We have gone back to fig leaves! The consequences, though stoutly denied by many, are obvious. Unleashed lust is wreaking havoc in the lives of young and old. Those who use the fact that old women and children are also being raped as a defence of skimpy clothing are ignorant of the fact that the victim of an act of rape may not be the cause of the act at all. Lust incited by younger women can find its fulfilment in old women and even children because they are defenceless! The sad truth, therefore, is that old women and children are suffering because of the skimpy clothing of younger women. Lust need not discriminate in its object of fulfilment.
Rev. Herro Blair has spoken truth. He need not be unduly disturbed by the attacks being made against his forthright statement. All of this is only a part of the present revolt against God, especially in the western world.
I am, etc.,
