Much more to be done for World Cup
published: Saturday | August 28, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THERE IS a critical time factor involved in regard to the World Cup Cricket 2007 and the redevelopment of downtown Kingston. One of the major stakeholders, the Jamaican Government, has given an undertaking to commit approximately $450 million in various projects. May I ask the other major stakeholders such as corporate Jamaica and the Jamaican diaspora from the U.S.A, U.K and Canada to match the much needed financial support.

There is much to be done for downtown, Kingston to be ready for World Cup Cricket 2007. This is truly a lifetime opportunity to recreate the former glory of one of Jamaica's and the Caribbean's most prolific cities.

There is need for hotels, sports and music entertainment museums for tourists. The first city of Jamaica's redevelopment is also fundamental to rebuild an image that other foreign investors will want to make long-term direct foreign investment into Jamaica. Redevelopment gives a strong indication that a country is trying to focus on maximising its core resources.

I am, etc.,
