By Petrina Francis, Staff Reporter ONLY EMERGENCY cases will be seen at hospitals across Jamaica as a result of the threat posed by Hurricane Ivan. Up to yesterday, hospitals had been sending home patients who are not critically ill. David Dobson, administrator at the Kingston Public Hospital (KPH), told The Gleaner that the facility had suspended all outpatient services and elective cases. He noted that only dire emergencies would be seen. In addition, he said the hospital was trying to reduce the population by sending home patients who are well enough. He said the hospital's major concern was that "our patient are very ill and we require reasonable staff". Noting that the hospital was relatively prepared for the hurricane, Mr. Dobson said patients have been relocated from areas which are considered to be dangerous and standby services and generators are intact. Like KPH, the University Hospital of the West Indies has been sending home patients who are not critically ill. In a press release from the hospital, the CEO noted that all outpatient clinics will be closed until further notice and all surgeries have been cancelled, except for emergencies. PATIENTS SENT HOME In the meantime, Alwyn Miller, Chief Executive Officer of the Black River Hospital in St. Elizabeth, said that the hospital was prepared for the hurricane. Patients not deemed to be seriously ill are being sent home and they have a choice of returning on Monday if necessary. He said plans were in place to evacuate patients and staff to the Black River High School and the New Town Community Centre if the need arises. Mr. Miller said that in the aftermath of the hurricane, a new team of doctors and other staff members will be in place and they should have adequate supplies to meet the demand of persons who are injured. Meanwhile, Kimberley Carraha, director of the Kingston and St. Andrew Branch of the Red Cross told The Gleaner that the organization was prepared to send manpower out to the various shelters. In addition she noted that they have adequate supplies of clothing for anyone who is in need and the emergency operation centre at the office on Arnold Road, Kingston, will be open for those who need help.
