By Omar Anderson, Gleaner Writer SHOPPERS AT the new Brooklyn Supermarket (formerly Lenn Happ Supermarket) in Twin Gates Plaza, St. Andrew will be treated to what most buyers wish. Lower prices and improved customer service! Those are what managing director Albert Lym says will be the hallmarks of the 'new' store he bought on August 1, this year from Wallace Campbell, the former managing director of Lenn Happ Supermarket. Mr. Lym, chairman of Progres-sive Grocers, owners and operators of Shoppers Fair, Brooklyn, JR's Bargain World, Sovereign, John R. Wong, Super Valu, and D&Y Supermarkets, states that with the new branding of the store, he will be repositioning it to woo new customers, while retaining faithful ones. "We have better prices," he told The Gleaner yesterday, "and with our reputation before, we hope to continue on that pattern of providing quality service." NEW OPENING HOURS In that regard, Mr. Lym says Brooklyn Supermarket in Twin Gates now has new opening hours to facilitate customers. Between Mondays and Thursday, the store will open from 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. The supermarket closes half-an-hour later on Fridays and Saturdays, but opens between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. on Sundays. SURVIVING COMPETITION "The different opening hours should offer more convenience to customers," he says emphatically. Recently, when Mr. Campbell decided to sell Lenn Happ, he said part of his reason was the stiff competition given by the major food chains like MegaMart, SuperPlus and others. Mr. Lym says he agrees with this notion, but he expects the latest acquisition to survive since it will now form part of the Progressive Grocers food chain. "We buy at better prices because we are a group," he says of his 30 stores in the Progressive Grocers chain. "Any one-standing store is going to have it hard competing with the major food chains." Having retained most of the Lenn Happ staff members, Mr. Lym says the transition was very smooth. He also spoke glowingly of Mr. Campbell, crediting him for maintaining a reasonable quality of service over the years. The new Brooklyn Supermarket boss says business is slow but he hopes for quick improvement. Mr. Lym refuses to state the deal package, but notes it was good although "it could have been better".
