THE EDITOR, Sir: EXPRESSIONS OF outrage at the reprehensible behaviour of those who took advantage of our vulnerabilities during the hurricane by looting and shooting, and adding to the carnage, were at the forefront of discussions on Ivan. While that behaviour should be condemned, as it was, it was expected. Unfortunate as this expectation was, measures were implemented and we must commend the security forces who sought to protect us from those unscrupulous persons who are unfortunately part of our society. Others who are also unfortunately a part of our society, are the white-collar looters and extortionists who are even more unscrupulous. I speak specifically of the actions of some owners of hardware stores, gas stations, supermarkets etc. who preyed upon our need for essential items as we desperately attempted to prepare for something entirely out of our control. Their behaviour should be condemned with even more fervour. As a country that delights in our recognition of a God, especially at these times, I was appalled at the widespread attempts at gouging the last cent out of people's pockets in the face of what some might say was God's manifestation. For my small part, I will surely cease to do business with those that I am personally aware of, and I encourage others to follow suit. I am, etc., CAROLYN GRAHAM Long Mountain
