More cash for relief efforts
published: Tuesday | September 21, 2004

PRIVATE SECTOR interests have already given some $500 million in aid to assist with recovery efforts following Hurricane Ivan and more is still on the way, says Burchell Whiteman, Information Minister.

At a post-Cabinet press briefing held yesterday at Jamaica House, Minister Whiteman explained that the private sector had been stepping up to the plate with aid. "I think from the local private sector we have received in excess of $500 million," Whiteman said.

PRESENTATIONS

He explained that both Prime Minister P.J. Patterson and Dr. Omar Davies, Finance and Planning Minister, will be making presentations in the House of Representatives today to address the country's economic targets and the nation's path to recovery after the hurricane.

The Government recently established the Office of National Reconstruction (ONR) to spearhead and coordinate the longer-term reconstruction and rehabilitation efforts. Director of Elections Danville Walker has been seconded from the Electoral Office for six months to lead the ONR.
