THE NATIONAL Works Agency (NWA) said 10 days after the passage of Hurricane Ivan, it has managed to clear well over 70 per cent of reported storm-related roadblocks. Up to yesterday morning, the agency reported that it had cleared 767 of the 1,037 reported blocked roads.
Vando Palmer, communication and customer services manager at the NWA, said that of that number, 411 are fully cleared, while 356 are open to single lane traffic. He said, however, that there are still roads that remain impassable because of fallen trees and inundation.
CRITICAL ROADS TO BE FIXED
Among some of the critical roads identified by Mr. Palmer, that have not yet been cleared are:
In Kingston and St. Andrew, Mountain Spring Road and sections of Coopers Hill. In St. Catherine; Bog Walk to Santa Maria, Glengoffe to Mt. Industry and Williamsfield to Glengoffe.
In Trelawny, Duncans to Long Pond, Ulster Spring to Stettin, Albert Town to Allsides and Kinloss to Burnt Hill.
In St. Thomas, Yallahs Fording, Wilmington to Potosi, Hagley Gap to Mahogany Vale and Danvers Pen.
In St. James, Montpelier to Cambridge, Point to Flamstead and Cambridge to Washfoot Gully. In Hanover; Rock Spring, Cash Hill to Dundee, Salt Spring to Grange and Welcome to Cots.
According to Mr. Palmer, the NWA is committed to its mandate of clearing all blocked roads and is working with the Parish Councils to accomplish this in as short a time as possible.
