By Anthony Foster, Freelance WriterWORLD-CLASS, state-of-the-art facilities are what G.C. Foster College of Physical Education and Sport in Angels, St. Catherine, hopes to bring to Jamaica in the near future.
The college, the only one of its kind in the English-speaking Caribbean, is embarking on a drive to develop its sport facilities including the out-of-service swimming pool and diving pool. It is also planning to upgrade the track and field area, cricket, hockey and football fields.
Steve Ashman, project consultant, said the upgrades would cost somewhere in the region of $50 million and urged corporate Jamaica to come on board and make the dream a reality.
COMPANIES GET NAMES
He said sponsors would be able to get facilities named after their company or any other name they wished to use. They were also plans to sell advertising billboards.
Dr. Raymoth Notice, Spanish Town's Mayor and Chairman of the St. Catherine Parish Council, said his parish had the resources to fund the entire project.
"Spanish Town is not broke Spanish Town is rich. The businesses in Spanish Town alone could give more than $50 million," Notice said. Notice then got the account drive rolling with a personal donation of $10,000.
G.C. Foster College's facilities have been used for many sporting activities such as Boys and Girls Champs, Premier League matches, parish cricket, JFF camps, the Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) Academy, basketball and volleyball camps and athletic club championships.
