Becoming Haiti's pillar of strength
published: Saturday | September 25, 2004
THE EDITOR, Sir:THE BIBLE tells us that in all things give thanks and indeed we Jamaicans have much to be thankful for. This point is crystal clear when we take a look at what is happening to our brothers and sisters in Haiti. I implore all Jamaicans to remember them in your prayers and even in our own time of great need, that we do not forget the suffering of these people.
I ask that CARICOM move swiftly in assisting with the rebuilding of that battered country as it did for Jamaica and Cayman. I also call on the international community to join this initiative and show a more human side to a people who have carried many burdens. We in Jamaica are known the world over as a giving people, even when there is only little to give. Let us not turn a blind eye at this time but instead remember how difficult it has been for us, even though the Lord spared us the wrath of 'Ivan'.
From all indications, it is ten times worse in Haiti. When the cries of our people ring out, we must never pretend as if we don't hear them. We must rise to the occasion and become their pillars of strength and refuge from the storm.
