A big little hero
published: Monday | October 4, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

DURING AND after the travail of Hurricane Ivan, a number of heroes were stirred up. The most fascinating of all these heroes is the youngest to date - one little Anthony Gayle-Spence.

While the traffic lights at the cross section of Mandela Highway and the Caymanas Crossing was out of operation, a child was seen directing the traffic with tree limbs. It might be what we call a street child but consider this, if a hero at that young age, improvising with tree limbs to get done what he has to do, can you imagine what he can be in the future.

The sad thing is that adults would sit in their vehicles and overlook his efforts, or take it for granted. We do not recognise heroes in this country and that is why our champions are those who commit the most atrocious acts of violence.

It was the driver of Luxury Bus 318, Mr. Findley - himself worthy of recognition - who identified the heroism of the child and endeavoured to get his name. Much commendations to you, Mr. Gayle-Spence, in a developed country, you would be awarded a medal of some kind.

I am, etc.,

JM FLETCHER
