CWJ, be more innovative

THE EDITOR, Sir:CABLE & WIRELESS, Jamaica (CWJ) has recently announced that it would be embarking on a campaign to sensitise its present customers as to the importance and convenience of their having and maintaining their land line telephones.
Whilst I agree with CWJ as to the importance and convenience of having a land line, I can see why so many customers have elected to terminate their land line service for cellular service. Clearly, CWJ has made the maintenance of a land line service economically difficult for most Jamaicans. CWJ needs to become more innovative with its land line service, as this would not only maintain current customers but also attract many former and first-time customers.
CWJ should consider developing price packages for land line customers to choose from. These packages, which could be designed to be either pre- or post-paid, would be for a fixed monthly fee and would allow for unlimited calling in the area provided for by the plan. The price packages would range from the basic or local plan, which would mean unlimited calling within a parish for a monthly fee of, say, $1,000 or $1,500, as is reasonable, for residential customers. Business customer plans could be a little higher.
Another package would be the regional plan, which would see customers being able to make calls to all exchanges within any one of the three counties. Plans could also be developed for international calls.
