CVM forges alliance with CNN International
published: Thursday | October 7, 2004

CARLINGTON WILMOT, Freelance Photographer - CVM TV and HOT 102 signed a contract on Tuesday with Cable News Network (CNN) to be CNN's official affiliates in Jamaica. Celebrating the merger (from left) are Lydia Thompson, senior reporter at CVM; Milton Walker, Managing Editor; President of the CVM Communications Group, Dr. David McBean, and Harris Whitbeck, CNN's Latin American correspondent.

CVM TELEVISION and its radio counterpart HOT 102 have formed an alliance with Cable News Network (CNN) International to bring the news of the world to Jamaica through their stations.

The deal was officially launched on Tuesday at the Knutsford Court Hotel, where members of the CVM Communications Group and CNN International outlined details of the connection.

This agreement grants CVM and HOT 102 exclusive rights to broadcasts from CNN International; making both stations official CNN international affiliates in Jamaica. CNN International includes CNN Radio and CNN News Source Latin America. HOT 102 radio's programming will now include a three-minute CNN international round up at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. and two segments of news from CNN at 7 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. during Drive Time Live. On CVM TV, there will be a five-minute international update from CNN before their local news programme, News Watch. In addition, the Global Watch segment of News Watch will contain a CNN international update as well as stories from other international sources.

EFFECTIVE DEAL

President of the CVM Communications Group, Dr. David McBean, described the deal as an effective, operational relationship that would be mutually beneficial. He said the move was to ensure CVM's news coverage would meet international standards and further raise the level of local news production. He expressed confidence that the Jamaican audience would benefit from the more widespread information.

CNN's correspondent in Latin America, Harris Whitbeck, who will be the main liaison with CVM based on the agreement, felt that CNN would also be gaining from the deal. He pointed out that in the business of news gathering from this section of the world, it was important for his company to have a partner in the Caribbean. He cited that, from his experience, it is always easier to have a ready, reliable and friendly news source when gathering information from foreign territories.
