THE EDITOR, Sir:
WHAT ELSE could be my topic? The place least remembered received a remarkable moment of joy, happiness and laughter from the spectacular feat of Veronica Campbell.
I speak on behalf of the inmates of South Campbell Adult Correctional Centre. I will speak of Wednesday, August 25, 2004.
The day did not start out wonderful, but we were pleased to see it. We were awakened with the heroic name Veronica Campbell. Among the shouts of gold was a colourful sight as inmates brandished items of gold T-shirts, hats, trousers and even their bodies bore the name.
The blackboards on the sections were decorated. One in particular had GOLD marked across in yellow and green. In the letter G was written Veronica O - Campbell, L - J'can and D - Camp. It read Veronica Campbell J'can champ.
One inmate who calls himself consultant shouted "Gold Veronica," as he waved the national flag and sprinted throughout the prison. Like all of us, he predicted gold. It was a state of joy and happiness.
Veronica, you have done what no one else has done to the prison. You allowed us to forget our sentences and worries for a while and put a smile on our faces.
We love you and thank you for the gold you have given Jamaica. My prayer was answered, our anthem was played in Greece. I thank you Lord and I thank you Veronica.
I am, etc.,
