Governor-General to receive special honour
published: Wednesday | October 27, 2004

Cooke

GOVERNOR-GENERAL Sir Howard Cooke has been selected to receive a special honour from London-based educational institute, City & Guilds.

The Governor-General will be awarded a Fellowship (FCGI) by the Director General of City & Guilds, Mr. Chris Humphries. Sir Howard's Fellowship honour has been conferred on him in recognition of his distinguished career and lifelong support for City & Guilds. Sir Howard is an alumnus as well as a former teacher of courses leading to City & Guilds qualifications and supported City & Guilds in his opening speech to Skills Jamaica 2003.

SUCCESS

According to Lady Sue Garden, Fellowship Consultant for the Institute: "City & Guilds Fellowships are only awarded to a few individuals each year for their outstanding professional and personal achievement. Their success reflects City & Guilds' vision of working to build a world in which all people and organisations can access the skills needed for economic and personal well being.

"Under the Institute's Royal Charter, a Fellowship is the highest award, and the greatest accolade that can be conferred by the Council of City & Guilds. Fellows are encouraged to lend their support and expertise to the work of the Institute, and to act as champions for its mission and vision." City & Guilds, the organisation awarding the Fellowship, was founded in 1878 and was awarded a Royal Charter in 1900. The Institute is recognised worldwide for the quality and portability of its vocational qualifications offered in over 100 countries including Jamaica. The Fellowship nomination was proposed by Mr. Richard McKenzie and supported by Vice-Chancellor of the University of the West Indies, Professor Rex Nettleford and Dr. Claude Packer, principal of Mico Teachers' College.

Fellowship presentations normally take place in London, but Sir Howard has expressed a preference to have the presentation take place in Jamaica. "I was greatly surprised when I learned that I had been selected to be honoured by the City and Guilds of London Institute. I am pleased that arrangements are being made for Mr. Chris Humphries to make the award of the Fellowship (FCGI) at the British High Commission in Jamaica," said the Governor-General.
