Obtaining UWI identification cards
published: Saturday | October 30, 2004
THE EDITOR, Sir:I REFER to the letter from Jennifer Hewitt which appeared in The Gleaner of Tuesday, October 26, and which outlined difficulties which she and her colleagues were facing in obtaining identification cards and accessing library facilities on campus. As Ms Hewitt indicated, the programme in which she is registered is jointly offered by the UWI and one of the teachers' colleges in rural Jamaica.
This is a new programme and the understanding was that arrangements would be made by the college concerned for students to be transported to the campus for their identification cards to be prepared. I wish to advise that the photo sessions for students from that site are scheduled for Thursday, October 28. In instances where off-site students have not yet received identification cards the University facilitates such students who wish to access the library on campus. The standard procedure, is that the relevant institution advise its counterpart department on the campus in advance, so that appropriate arrangements may be made.
In closing, I wish to assure Ms. Hewitt and her colleagues that the rules of the UWI apply equally to all its students and that there certainly is no intention to discriminate against non-campus-based students in good financial standing.
I am, etc.,
