Patients at risk
published: Monday | November 1, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

PLEASE GIVE me a small space in your column to shine some light upon two problems facing staff, patients and visitors at the Princess Margaret Hospital in St. Thomas, since Hurricane Ivan hit Jamaica.

Since then, the elevator and line phone stopped working. The porters have to put patients into wheelchairs and lift them to the upper floor.

I am asking the people at the Regional level to come to the rescue of all who have to use this hospital, for the safety of patients and workers is at great risk; the conditions there also cause patients more discomfort. I must take this opportunity to commend the entire staff for being so consistent in carrying out their duties in such professional, and in humanitarian style.

Since the hurricane the hospital is still without a working elevator, a telephone. This hospital is the only one serving St. Thomas and Eastern Portland. Please do not wait until a patient falls from one of those wheel-chairs.

I am, etc.,

J.A. BAILEY

Dalvey P.O.
