Jamaica gets top place at regional food competition
published: Monday | November 1, 2004

FOR THE first time in the eight-year history of the Caribbean Food and Nutrition Institute's (CFNI) regional Food and Nutrition Quiz Competition, the team from Jamaica has copped the top prize. Emerging as the winners were the Aabuthnott Gallimore High School, from Jamaica, comprising team members Andrene Barret, Nastassia Henry, Yesaan Cum-mings and Dacoda Cummings.

As part of their prize, the team and their coach will travel to Antigua where they will be presented with the Sagicor Trophy at an awards ceremony on Novem-ber 17 at a regional nutrition conference, hosted by CFNI from November 15-19.

PRIZES

Senior nutrition and health officials from around the Caribbean, as well as government ministers and a wide representation of persons in nutrition, education and agriculture in Antigua are expected to attend the ceremony.

In addition to the prize trip and trophy, Sagicor's sponsorship of this premier nutrition initiative among youth included cash and book prizes.

Taking second place in the quiz competition was the team from Micound Secondary school representing St. Lucia. Third-place winner was the team from the British Virgin Islands, comprising students from Bregado Flax Educational Centre in Virgin Gorda and the BVI High School in Tortola. Denn Dock and Company Ltd. and Guardian Life Ltd., two Jamaican companies sponsored the trophy and cash prizes for the winners.

ST LUCIAN WINNER

A member of the St. Lucia team, Tina Mathurin, emerged the 'Individual Champion', surpassing her teammates and members of other competing teams to take the trophy awarded by the Caribbean Association of Home Economics (CAHE), Tina, accompanied by her coach, will also travel to Antigua to receive her prizes.

The Caribbean Food and Nutrition Institute (CFNI), a specialised centre of the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO), sponsored the quiz competition annually. Twelve countries participated in the keenly contested competition during October 25-26, using the audioconference facilities of the University of the West Indies Distance Education Centre (UWIDEC). The objectives of the competition are to promote nutrition and healthy lifestyle among students and highlighting nutrition as a career option. Preparing for the quiz also helps students in their preparation for their CXC examination in food and nutrition.
