LETTER OF THE DAY - A freak accident!
published: Saturday | November 6, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

ON TUESDAY October 26 at approximately 7:45 p.m. I was travelling home on Constant Spring Road. I had just passed the traffic lights at Mary Brown's Corner and Shortwood Road and was surprised that the usual long line of traffic was not in sight, as is normal in the evenings, and felt quite happy that there was no delay! There were two cars ahead of me and one behind. Coming down on the opposite side was a trailer with a high cab. What happened thereafter, even now, seems unreal.

Electrical wires from the light posts caught on the top of the trailer's cab and from then on confusion reigned. The transformers on the light poles, with sparks gashing, fell in front and beside the cars ahead of me, light poles were lifted out of the ground like thin sticks.

The trailer driver seemed to be oblivious to all that was happening until he was commanded by shouts from a passer-by to "stop and look what happening". Miracously, none of the light posts fell on the cars ahead of me or my car and the fallen wires did neither damage to persons or vehicles.

The stunned trailer driver then switched on his engine and tried to move and that brought down a light pole that was caught in the back of the cab.

The pole fell in front of my car just missing the bonnet. As other drivers came upon the scene, many were anxious and some were angry about the inconvenience because the road was partially blocked. I tried calling the police and authorities to report the incident, but to no avail.

I journeyed home dazed, but at the same time praising God for His divine protection.

The following morning, a friend, unaware of the incident, called to share with me her Bible study of the previous evening (time of the incident) which was on divine protection, using Isaiah 54:17.

Even today remnants of the 'freak accident' can be seen on the road. Light posts are laid to one side, wires remain dangling and a light post is still 'cotched' up on a school fence!

I am, etc.,
