LETTER OF THE DAY - Build cross-harbour bridge to airport
published: Thursday | November 25, 2004
THE EDITOR, Sir:
SUNDAY'S GLEANER with the headline 'Airport Dilemma' has caught my interest for several reasons. I have noticed the destruction of the highway leading to the Norman Manley International Airport and it has made me wonder what would have happened if Ivan had made a direct hit on our island. The damage to the road and it's surroundings would've been far worse. Imagine if the airport had been isolated from the rest of the country for more than the two days as was the case. Transport Minister Pickersgill should
give serious thought for an alternate route to our airport.
The proposal to make Vernamfield a 'cargo airport' as part of Mr. Patterson's 'Millennium Projects' is a little too excessive. Highway 2000 is going well and we can't wait for this and other road projects to ease the time and burden for our motorists on our already congested roads. The drive to our main airport is already quite 'scenic' once we enter Mountain View and then Windward Road. The destruction of the peninsular further adds to it! Mr. Patterson it would have been so helpful if we had a bridge or causeway, call it whatever makes you happy.
My proposal is this: Some-where along the harbour with downtown Kingston, at it's narrowest reach to the penin-sular, or with the airport, construct a bridge to get us right into the airport and with arteries to Harbour View and inevitably to the east. The French company already hired for the Highway 2000 project could give the Government a proposal on what I believe is a worthy venture.
I am, etc.,
