JAMAICA'S NEW-LOOK national senior team continued their goal spree last night as they romped to an 11-1 spanking of the United States Virgin Islands (USVI), in their Digicel Caribbean Cup preliminary round game at Jarrett Park last night.

After beating St. Martin 11-0 on Wednesday, Jamaica confirmed their place in the next round as midfielder Jermaine Hue bagged a hat-trick, while Roland Dean and substitute Teofore Bennett got two each. Luton Shelton, Fabian Davis, Khari Stephenson and captain Andy Williams all contributed to the final tally.

Vincent Lauro scored the USVI's lone goal in the 70th minute, their first goal in the tournament.

Meanwhile Haiti also booked their place in the next round after beating St. Martin 2-0 in a drab encounter as Richard Pierre Bruny in the 25th and Dieuphene Thelamour in the 67th gave them full points.

After the first game, the fair-size crowd that turned out was entertained by some crisp midfield play by the Jamaicans who totally dominated the USVI team, hardly allowing them to venture across the half line.

SATISFIED

Jamaica's interim head coach, Wendell Downswell, who had little to do for most of the game, said he was satisfied with the performance of the team.

"It was a good performance tonight despite us giving up a soft goal and I was very satisfied with what I saw," he told The Gleaner.

Downswell, who said the big test would come against the Haitians at the National Stadium tomorrow, also said the midfield play was satisfying.

His opposing counterpart, Felix St. Rose, was not so happy after the game, however, and said his players did not take heed to pre-game instructions which was to slow the game down and not allow the homesters to dictate the pace.

Whatever the instructions, it was the Jamaicans who were earliest out of the blocks and never allowed the visitors any chances.

CHANGES

They made two changes to the team that played on Wednesday, bringing in Harbour View's goalkeeper Ryan Thompson for Sean Sawyers and Shavar Thomas at sweeper in place of Damion Stewart, with Jermaine Taylor playing as part of the midfield five in the 3-5-2 formation.

With Williams and Hue dictating the tempo from midfield, they surged forward in waves and it was only a matter of time before the goals would come.

Shelton obliged in the ninth minute when he ran on to a ball, managed to keep his composure inside the penalty box and beat goalkeeper Terrence Jones to his left.

After denying Dean's well-placed header in the 12th minute, the USVI was forced to change Jones, who fell badly in a collision with the Tivoli Gardens player and was substituted by Richard Mathews.

Dean made it 2-0 in the 23rd when he finished off a brilliant run by placing the ball just wide of Mathews into the far left hand corner and added his second in the 32nd minute when he beat the hapless goalkeeper with a thunderous shot from close range.

Four minutes later Hue got his first when he skipped through the defence and unleashed a powerful left footer to make it 4-0.

The quick goals caused panic in the USVI defence and they just missed scoring two own goals but it was Stephenson who added the fifth in the 40th when he had time to tee up a pass from Jermaine Taylor and powered it into the net.

Williams made it six, five minutes into the second half, when he converted a nicely weighted pass from Shelton from the left side of the box and Hue made it 7-0 three minutes later.

A GOOD NIGHT'S WORK

The Harbour View midfielder rounded off his good night's work when he converted a penalty kick after Shelton was brought down in the box in the 58th minute.

Davis scored maybe the best goal of the evening in the 63rd minute when he raced down the right flank, cut into the area and unleashed a torrid left footer that screamed into the back of the net.

Bennett, who replaced Luton, grabbed two quick strikes in the 66th and 67th minutes to round off the scoring.

Lauro pulled one back when he raced into the Jamaica area on a quick counter and beat the advancing Thompson before scoring into an empty goal.

Bennett should have claimed his hat-trick late in then game but his chipped shot skimmed off the crossbar.
