Desouza sinks hapless Braeton

WAULGROVIANS' SUZETTE Desouza, along with captain Oberon Pitterson, taught Braeton a painful 54-17 lesson during their clash in the Jamaica Netball Association/Jamaica National Building Society (JNA/JNBS) Open League at the Leila Robinson Courts yesterday.

Taking her time, Desouza got into her groove, slowly picking apart her much shorter and less experienced marker Karen Smith.

To be fair, Smith forced Desouza into a few uncharacteristic turnovers but those were too few to affect the outcome of the game.

Even with the older legs of Pitterson at centre, the pace of the Waulgrovians' team was too much for Braeton, who opted to build slowly, trying not to give up turnovers.

That plan backfired, as the defence of Marvetta Murray and Nichala Gibson had all the time in the world to push Braeton's goalshooter, Stacey Ann Allen and Shaunette Walker at goal attack into less than threatening positions.

The veteran Connie Francis played goal attack for Waul-grovians yesterday and showed her maturity by passing the ball to Desouza on every occasion that her partner was isolated with Smith, not that Desouza had a problem out-manoeuvring both defenders when it became necessary and it almost never did.

ONE RESERVE

This season, as has been the case for a number of years now, it seems that the Waulgrovians' team will have to play a little short-staffed. Last night, they only had the services of one reserve, however, they look to be physically well prepared and made a good show of doing their warm-down routines after the game while their opponents flopped to the ground by their benches.

In other games last night, Friendship gave Progressive Strikers no quarter as the latter attempted to dig themselves out of a hole, dishing out a 22-11 defeat that marked Progressive's third in as many weeks.

UWI Revolution managed to emerge from their slump by grabbing a hard-fought 21-18 win over Up Park Camp, who have also lost three in a row.

Tomorrow, there will be no games as the JNA will hold its annual general meeting at St Hugh's High School, starting at 2:30 p.m.
