Young, gifted and black'
published: Sunday | December 26, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

WE ARE truly young, gifted and black. If ever there was a time that I am proud to be Jamaican, it is now, at the ripe 'young' age of 46.

I went to the Heineken Startime, and I got my money's worth. The performances were excellence personified. We are truly a great people, and if I were to really express how I feel, I would be moved to tears.

The best music makes you remember a beautiful time in our history when creativity was the thing. Some of the present day entertainers 'can't hold a candle' to the likes of Marcia Griffiths, Leroy Sibbles, Half Pint, The Mighty Diamonds and not to mention Lloyd Parkes and We The People Band.

TIRED OF THE SLACKNESS

The one-drop rhythm is back and it is a beautiful thing thanks to Jah Cure, I-Wayne, Richie Spice, TOK, etc. "This is Reggae Music"! We are tired of the slackness. Is that all some of the deejays know? They need to raise their standards or go get some education. We are Jamaica, and many want to be like us.

The 'vibe' you get from a Jamaican concert like Heineken Startime is unique only in Jamaica. The music literally touches your soul and you rock, and you dip, and you 'wine', and combined with the drinks, the ganja that permeates the air, the smell of drum chicken, and soup, it's the best feeling. You can just feel the love. Thank you MKB. It was truly a pleasure to have been re-united with the greats, and with the turn that the music is taking now, we are getting back on track.

Love Jamaica, proud to be Jamaican. We are criticised for many things, but take it or leave it, we are the best! Truly young, gifted and black. Jamaican to the core

I am, etc.,

ANDREA THOMPSON
