THE EDITOR, Sir:TODAY MANY persons across the world are still in a state of shock and bewilderment as they contemplate the magnitude of the terrible tsunami tragedy that has devastated parts of Asia and Africa.
Persons are left grieving over the loss of loved ones, friends and neighbours. Others are still clinging desperately to the hope that the next survivor or survivors found would be that missing person or persons that they are searching for.
The Caribbean region recently experienced another kind of natural disaster in the form of several hurricanes that ravaged the region. Some countries are still in the recovery stage. Maybe this will act as a reminder to all of us, that we are not in complete control of our lives, the Bible speaks about such natural disasters as earthquakes etc. occurring in the last days. The tsunami that devastated parts of Asia and Africa was as a direct result of an earthquake at sea.
We are now almost at the end of another year, and for many persons this is a time of grand celebration as we express joy for the fact that our lives have been spared. For some New Years Eve will find them in the House of God where they will give thanks and praises, others will be dancing and drinking the night away in merriment, some will spend quiet time with friends and family while others may find themselves simply reflecting on the past year.
Although In Jamaica, we are thousands of miles away from those that are hurting, we can still help at this time by praying that the grieving will be comforted, that the aid will reach those in need and that God will give strength and courage to those persons who are volunteering to help in this time of distress. As a nation we should also send whatever relief supplies or help in the form of trained professionals or volunteers.
I am, etc.,
