Jamaica elected to chair int'l meeting
published: Tuesday | February 1, 2005

Admiral Brady

REAR ADMIRAL Peter Brady, director-general of the Maritime Authority of Jamaica (MAJ), was again unanimously elected to chair the International Maritime Organisation's (IMO) 37th Session of the Standards of Training and Watchkeeping (STW) Sub-Committee to be held in January 2006.

Harry Maragh, president of the Shipping Association of Jamaica, sent a congratulatory letter to Admiral Brady on his election, noting, "The IMO's confidence in your outstanding abilities is very well placed. We are proud of the fact that a son of Jamaica is so highly regarded in the international maritime industry and we see your chairing of this prestigious committee as an indication of the excellent reputation that you, and our country, enjoy among our peers."

FOURTH TERM

This will be the fourth time that Admiral Brady will be chairing this prestigious committee, having chaired twice before while holding the position of vice-chair and this year as chairman, having been elected in 2004 to oversee the 36th session, just completed.

"I am very appreciative of the confidence that the rest of the world has shown in Jamaica's ability to competently guide these important deliberations by electing us to be the chair for two consecutive years. Prior to being elected as chair, I was vice-chair for two years, but had to actually act as chair, due to the absence of the then-elected chairman," Admiral Brady explained.

At this 36th session, some of the main agenda items included matters relating to passenger ship safety; measures to enhance maritime security training and certification requirements; development of training requirements for the control and management of ships, ballast water and sediments; development of competence for ratings validation of IMO model courses, and unlawful practices associated with certificates of competency.
