Wignall in prime form

Wignall

COMMONWEALTH GAMES bronze medallist Maurice Wignall raced to a world leading 60m hurdles time at yesterday's TEAG Indoor 2005 Track Meet in Germany.

Wignall, the 2001 Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games 110m gold medallist, stopped the clock at 7.54 seconds to erase his previous mark of 7.62, set in January.

World 110m hurdles champion Allen Johnson and his American teammate, Ron Bramlett, both shared the previous world leading time, 7.62, with Wignall, who had barely missed a medal at the Olympic Games in Athens after placing fourth.

The holder of Jamaica's 60m hurdles indoor record (7.52), Wignall, defeated Elmar Licht-enegger of Austria (7.56) and Germany's Thomas Blashek (7.63).

Wignall is also the national 110m hurdles record holder, having raced to 13.28 seconds in 2003.

Meanwhile, national indoor long jump record holder (8.62), James Beckford, won that event yesterday. He leapt 8.01 metres to beat the German pair of Andreas Pohle (7.73) and Nils Winter (7.70).

In the men's 60m, Jamaican sprinter Patrick Jarrett finished sixth in 6.85 seconds.

The event was won by Alexander Kosenkow of Germany in 6.75 seconds, ahead of Andreas Baumann of Switzerland (6.77).
