Gayle
WEST INDIES opening batsman Christopher Gayle has been ruled out of Jamaica's Carib Beer Series squad which travels today for a sixth-round match against the Leeward Islands which begins on Friday.
The left-handed Gayle strained his right shoulder during the West Indies' VB Series tour of Australia and was advised by the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) not to throw, even if he was selected to play.
"Gayle will be doing some strength work for the next three weeks," chairman of selectors Ruddy Williams told The Gleaner yesterday.
Meanwhile, paceman Jerome Taylor looked very good in his two bowling spells yesterday under the watchful eyes of trainer David Bernard Sr. and has been included in the squad.
In his second spell, Taylor bowled with more pace. The first delivery of that spell beat David Bernard Jr. for pace and bounce.
Bernard Sr. said the selectors were satisfied with what Taylor delivered yesterday.
"He bowled in two spells and especially in the final spell, he felt very good," Bernard said. "And he finished off with a rearing bouncer.
TAYLOR FIT TO TOUR
"We had a meeting with the chairman (selectors) and his (Taylor's) input was involved in terms of his own feelings and our assessment and we are satisfied that he is fit enough to go on tour."
Jamaica will be away for their next three matches against the Leeward Islands, Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago.
They return on March 1 to face Barbados at Chedwin Park.
The squad set to travel to St. Maarten today sees the return of Brenton Parchment in for Gayle.
Parchment scored an even century in the team's match against Guyana at Kensington Park but failed in both innings against Trinidad and Tobago at Alpart last weekend.
The Jamaica 13-man squad: Wavell Hinds (captain), Marlon Samuels, Xavier Marshall, Tamar Lambert, Donovan Pagon, David Bernard, Brenton Parch-ment, Nikita Miller, Daren Powell, Carlton Baugh, Dwight Washington, Odean Brown and Jerome Taylor.
