WESTERN BUREAU:

REIGNING NATIONAL high school champions Kingston College (KC) and Holmwood Technical were the toasts of the day at Saturday's 27th staging of the Milo Western Relays at Catherine Hall, Montego Bay.

Fourteen records were broken and three established on a day that was described by Meet Director Ray Harvey as "very satisfactory."

"It is our intention to put on a quality meet here every year and this (performance) just goes to show we are succeeding in that regard."

In addition to the records on the track, the meet also saw record number of spectators, and the unfinished facility was unable to contain them, resulting in some spilling over on to the Mondo track.

The spectators enjoyed a day filled with fast times, as the Kingston College team signalled their readiness on the track with five relay wins four in record times, as they took the 4x100m in Classes Two through four, the 4x200m Class Two and the Mile Relay.

STIRRING BATTLE

Despite failing to win any of the sprint relays for the first time in nearly 10 years, the Maurice Wilson-coached Holmwood girls' team won the 4x200m, 4x400m and the 4x800, the latter for the first time in three years, beating two-time defending champions Edwin Allen in a stirring battle.

Vere Technical and St. Jago Girls won one relay event each, the Class One and Class Four 4x100m respectively, while Edwin Allen took the Class Two event and Manchester High won Class Three.

As expected, KC took the award for the 'Most Outstanding Men's Team'; Holmwood took the female team award, as well as the 'Most Disciplined Team' award.

Holmwood Technical's Omar Brown won the award for the 'Most Outstanding Male Athlete' running wonderful legs on the winning Class 1 4x100m team that won in a record 41.24 seconds, breaking their own record 41.74, set last year, and the Class One 4x200m 1:28.17.

Edwin Allen's Sherine Pinnock took the 'Most Outstanding Female' award, after winning the 400m hurdles in a meet record 60.09 seconds, and ran a 53.2 second leg on the 4x400m team to keep them in the chase.

SATISFACTORY RESULTS FOR OLYMPIANS

Holmwood Technical's Anniesha McLaughlin also had an outstanding meet, running on four relay teams and helping her team to three wins.

The three Olympians, Asafa Powell, Brigitte Foster-Hylton and Jermaine Gonzales, also had satisfactory results. Gonzales easily won the 400m Invitational in his first outing of the season in 47.18 seconds just outside the record.

Powell ,who says he is still doing hard work and was running in spikes for only the second time this season, started the MVP team that won the men's 4x100m and was part of the 4x400m team, while Foster ran two relays for UTech, helping them retain the Clubs/Institutions 4x100m and then taking the 4x200m from defending champs University of West Indies (UWI), both in record times.
